EUR Electronics and Libre software for Instrumentation and embedded SystEms (ELISE) Master

Attention!

Introduction

The Electronics and Libre tools for Instrumentation and embedded SystEms (ELISE) Master is an international Master taught in English and dedicated to students aiming for a carrier in the electronics industry. The Master also opens up the possibility to do a carrier in research in industry or in academia as a PhD student within the EUR EIPHI doctoral school.

During the 2 years at the Besançon site of uFC, the student will be pushed to interact strongly with research laboratory and particularly with the FEMTO-ST Institute, a large research laboratory in the field of fundamental and applied sciences and engineering.

Objective

The ELISE Master aims to give you a good grasp of different skills in digital electronics and in instrumentation that could be applied to all fields of industry (transport, health, energy, HPC, communication, production, aerospace & defense...). A key characteristic of the Elise Master is that it pushes the use of libre tools, software and hardware, for increased freedom and for improving learning and understanding.

Course content

In the first year, the master proposes courses that essentially reinforce your skills for designing embeded electronics and instrumentation systems: microcontroller, FPGA, noise, digital/analog conversion, signal processing, circuit design, network, digital control, IA tools... The 2nd year gives the opportunity to go deeper in these topics (kernel development, FPGA/µC mixed hardware, etc) and opens up to application fields. The second semester of the second year is exclusively devoted to an internship in a research laboratory, or a company that lasts 6 months.

Note that we place a large importance to application of learned skills: in each course about 45% of the time is devoted to practical labs (TP), and, each semester, you have a big cross-disciplinary project.

The detailed curiculum of each course may be found on the website of the EIPHI graduate school.

Enrollment

To apply for the Master, you need to have a good university Bachelor degree, or an equivalent degree, in the EEE field. In the motivation letter you should highlight what sets you ready for the Master: beyond basic analog/digital electronics skills, good knowledge of C programming for microcontroller (beyond Arduino...) is particularly important, as is some Linux/Unix literacy. A demonstrated interest in libre (Free as in Freedom) and open software/hardware will also be considered as an advantage.

The Master is open to full time students and to coop (alternance) students, who work in a company during the time devoted to project in the curriculum.

As the lectures are taught in English, a proficiency level B2 in this langage is required.

The ELISE master is part of the EUR EIPHI graduate school, and registration has to go through the procedure explained there. The Master is fully open to international students.
